Research Paper :
Adolescent Development and a Youth Ministry's Response
Rationale
For you to be an effective Youth Minister, you need to know the people of
the mission field you are seeking to reach. It is imperative to know how
students develop so you can make ministry strategies that are age
appropriate. Even though many of you will be in charge of kids birth to 18
years old, I want you to focus more on adolescents because of the major
transitions and issues. I want you to write the paper so that it would be
ready to present in a brief overview to a church search committee for your
first ministry job initially and for your adult staff training later.
Assignment
Research and type, a double spaced, well-written paper on “Adolescent
Development and a Youth Ministry’s Response”. All research including
scripture, must be properly documented.
a) Research and include information from at least five
different books.
b) Search the web and include one website article.
c) Review articles from journals and magazines (i.e.
Youthworker Journal or Children’s
Ministry Magazine) and include one article. This may be helpful for the
response.
The paper is to be divided in three broad categories of pre-(ages 8-10),
early (10-14), and late (15-19+) adolescence. Within each broad category,
fully research, understand, and communicate the five major areas (physical,
mental, emotional, social, and spiritual) of adolescent development
(remember your audience). The final component of this paper is for you to
include a strategy of what a disciple making youth ministry should do to
meet those specific needs of adolescents in each of those three broad
categories. Staple the finished paper in the top left corner and three hole
punch it on the left side. You do not need a cover page. You should just put
your name, class, and date in the upper right hand corner.
Because this is for your future adult staff, there will not be a minimum or
limit of pages. Do whatever it takes for you to understand the topic
yourself and be able to communicate it to others so they will understand it.
You need to discover this information. These will become foundational
principles that will guide you in your ministry years ahead. Good research
will also help you later on the take home mid-term essay questions and the
final exam.
Please turn it in with an attached grading sheet located on the youth
ministry website.
Below is a sample outline of one of the points. You will also have an
introduction and conclusion. Don’t limit yourself to my titles.
